My work visa expires on June 12th so that means that I will need to buy a tourist visa if I want to enter China again. I would’ve done it earlier, but I had to wait until I was done teaching or else my tourist visa would render my work visa invalid.
Yesterday, I woke up at 8am (SO early) to cross over the border checkpoint, hop on a metro, make 4 connections, and go to the visa office. Luckily, a friend got there before me to tell me that they were closed for Memorial Day. Great. I switched directions and went right back home. What a wasted trip.
Because I need this visa by tomorrow evening at the latest, I had to get to the office early enough to ensure that I could get it processed in time. The office opens at 9am. I woke up at 5:30am to cross the border, go all the way to the office, find it (I frequently get lost), and fill out the necessary paperwork. I got there at around 8:25am to find 25 people already in line ahead of me. Poo.
Once I got in, they told me that the earliest they could have it done is tomorrow morning. That means that I am stuck in Hong Kong for the night. I did not plan for this. I have no overnight things, but luckily I have my credit card so I don’t sleep in the streets and starve.
I have been wandering around the city, eating, reading, and relaxing. Currently, I am in an internet cafe where I bought four hours of online time. I’ve been able to catch up with some friends, talk to my awesome father, and work out my upcoming trip.
I’m thinking about going to see Harry Potter by myself, but I’m not sure I have enough confidence to watch a movie by myself. I saw the theater booking and there are only two other seats booked sitting together. Do I really want to be the person sitting by myself in an empty theater?
For the time being, I’ll be stuck here in Hong Kong. Hopefully I will be able to find a place to sleep for the night.
