Dongmen is one of the busiest and most crowded shopping areas in Shenzhen. I don’t dare wear my backpack on my back. That would be like wearing a big target on my back, asking people to mug me. Mike frequents Dongmen, specifically for their huge DVD selection.
You can buy just about anything there, although the majority of the goods are counterfeit. To get your attention, shopkeepers stand outside their doors with megaphones and stereos, clapping their hands and shouting to get your patronage. I must admit, it always gets me. I’ll be walking down the street, minding my own business, when I hear shouting and clapping. Then I think to myself “I must have whatever they’re selling” and I make a beelin for the shop. Errr, not. I would compare this strategy to attaching balloons to cars.
Warning: make sure your volume isn’t up too high because the video is extremely loud.
